Inflation

How are you doing financially? A pretty personal question, I know. Has the price of gas caused you to stop running here and there? Have you made any cutbacks? Have you noticed the price of groceries? $100 doesn't go far anymore. I got a really good deal on life cereal at Target yesterday. It was $.08 per ounce. Anything under $.10 an ounce gets me pretty excited. So I bought seven 51 ounce boxes. I may even go back for more.

The one cut we have had to make is in buying organic. I still prefer organic, and if the price is close I will go with the organic product...except with leafy greens...I won't give in on that one. Thank goodness Costco has organic greens at an affordable price. I actually like this new challenge: To feed my family as healthy as I possibly can, as affordably as possible.

I was not raised to be debt free. In fact, somewhere along the way, I learned that if you had a balance on your credit card you could make a minumum payment, not the full amount owed. I brought this mentality, along with student loans, into our marriage. It was a number of years before The King and I realized that we didn't want to live this way. It took us quite a few more years to work our way out of the hole we were in.

Now we are trying hard to not acquire debt. And no, we are not totally debt free. But, we have been able to pay cash for our last few vehicles. They may not be the newest, most perfect vehicles, but they are ours, free and clear. It's our thing. If we can't write a check for the car or any other major/minor purchase, then we can't have it. It's a very simple concept. One we are teaching to our children.

Oh, how easy it would be to continue to live like prices were not increasing by just using plastic....and making minimum payments. I wonder how many people are.

What I saw Today

Are you wondering what that white thing is on my rug near the door? Maybe this next photo will help:

At least he took the time to put on his sister's shoes.

Happy Birthday

Jouster was eligible for a 12 hour pass the day before his birthday. His only request: "I just want to be home for my 18th birthday." So, we picked him up at 9:00 a.m. and had him back by 9:00p.m. This is our traditional 'kid photo' for birthdays. It was good to have him home.
He's letting his hair grow out, and experimenting with some chin hairs. We got him a Culver's Turtle Cake for his big day. He used to work at Culver's and was happy we thought to get him one. The birthday person of honor chooses his/her meal and sits at the head of the table with our special birthday plate. Jouster had no requests for a meal. "Anything homemade," was his choice. We had barbecued dutch oven chicken, fresh bake whole wheat dinner rolls, peaches and cream, baked potatoes, and corn. He was thrilled with his birthday dinner. We were thrilled to be able to be with him.

Happy Birthday, son. We love you!

Family Day

Valleyfair day. Here we are at 10:00 a.m. Ready for a fun filled family day. Duchess and Maiden on the Mild Thing.
Prince Charming was too short to ride The Convoy. The person working told me as long as I rode with him they would allow him to ride. I don't know how I could have stopped him from jumping out from where I was sitting. It didn't matter anyway. We had such a hard time prying him from the truck, the worker let us go around for another ride. I was fortunate enough to ride three times!
We spent a few hours in the water park. Prince Charming went round and round in this tube in the little kids pool.
Duchess looking to see if she was tall enough to ride the Mad Mouse. She was, as long as someone responsible rode with her. That someone, that someone, that someone you see, that someone, that someone, that someone was me. Note to self: Call the chiropractor and make an appointment. You should know better. Remember, you are 40.
My favorite ride of all time is Thunder Canyon. Who wouldn't like a water ride on a hot summer day? Here we are after I got drenched on the ride. I always pick the wrong seat. The wrong seat is the one that goes under every water fall and goes head on with every wave.
And here we are at 10:00p.m. Yes, you read that right. TWELVE hours later. Don't the younger two look like they should have stayed a few more hours ? Just in case you can't see their happy faces, I zoomed in for you to see a little better.
Note to self: To avoid meltdown with the children, maybe try leaving a few hours earlier next time.

Shopping Trip

At the end of June, I was blessed with a few days away with my dear friend.
We went shopping, ate at one of my favorite restaurants, drank some good (and terrible) coffee, spent way too much time at IKEA, had a quiet night in our hotel, stroked some beautiful bolts of fabric, and spent a lot of time chatting.

One of our stops was at JoAnn's Etc. where I got myself a new craft project. (An idea I stole from my friend Lisa.) I thought I'd share.

Yes, it's a J. Our last name begins with a J in case you are wondering.
Scrapbook paper would make a lovely covering for this bland cardboard looking J, wouldn't you agree?
I tore some edges on the paper but the white was a little too bright for me. I used a stamping sponge and some stamping ink and rubbed a little color on the white. I liked the look a lot better.
I modge podged the paper onto my J. This was my first experience with modge podge. I have no idea if I did it correctly or not, but the paper seemed to stick.
Here is the finished product on my red wall. I am quite happy with the final result.
